"Demon Slayer" anime film sold 3.4 million tickets, box office revenue at 4.2 billion Yen in its first 3 days in Japan

The official website of Japan's MANTANWEB reported on Monday, that Koyoharu Gotouge's animated film "Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba The Movie - Mugen Train" has sold more than 3,424,930 tickets as of Sunday (Oct. 18) since the film's opening in Japanese theaters last October 16 earning a box office revenue amounting more than 4.6 billion yen (about US$43.85 million).

The first day of screening made history as it was now considered as the highest grossing weekday opening for any film in Japan with over 910,507 tickets sold earning over 1,268,724,700 yen (about US$12.03 million).

It was then followed by 1,270,234 tickets sold on its second day earning 1,701,723,350 yen (about US$16.14 million). On its third day, the film sold 1,239,752 tickets amounting to 1,652,669,400 yen (about US$15.67 million) in gross revenue.

According to the report, the film already surpassed the first 3-day box office revenue of the previous hit-animated films including Makoto Shinkai's "Your name." anime film which earned 1,277,960,000 yen (about US$12.51 million) in its first 3 days of screening last July 2016, and his next movie "Weathering With You" with 1,643,809,400 yen (about US$15.22 million) first 3-day revenue last July 2019. It also reported that its has surpassed the first 3-day revenue of Disney's Frozen 2 in Japan which earned around US$18.2 million in its first 3 days of screening last November 2019.

The film premiered in over 400 local theaters and 38 IMAX theaters in Japan. It also been reported that theaters are screening the film up to 40 times a day due to demand and is expected to create another milestone in animation industry for the next weeks.

The film will be released in Southeast Asia by ODEX as early as November in selected countries and on early 2021 for the remaining SEA countries. It will also premiere in North American theaters as early as 2021 by Funimation and Aniplex of America.
