Action role-playing game (RPG) “Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin” gets a manga adaptation for release on November 26, 2021 on the Komipre website. The game was developed by Edelweiss and published by Marvelous in November 2020 for the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and PC.

The game’s theme “rice is power!” puts emphasis on rice farming and with a decent amount of fighting. Almost a year after its release worldwide, the game has sold over 1 million copies. Jiji & Pinchi, known for works like “Sailor Zombie” and “Hell Story”, are in charge of the adaptation under the supervision of the game’s publisher.

More on the Game

Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin is an action RPG that follows the story of Princess Sakuna, a spoiled warrior and harvest goddess that was banished to the Isle of Demons as punishment along with her familiar and a small group of humans. Luckily, Sakuna inherits the genes of her powerful parents Takeirbi, the war god, and Toyohana, the harvest goddess. Players control the princess in two main gameplay styles: a hack and slash platforming sidescroller facing various fiends and a farming simulator where growing rice is the main focus.

The game was developed by the two-man team known as Edelweiss, known for the shoot ‘em up game Astebreed in 2014, who started development back in 2015 with major focus on farming and fighting elements. The game’s artist Koichi even grew rice on his balcony as an additional form of research to learn more about the process. The game first released in North America on November 10, 2020 followed by Japan, Europe, and Australia a few days later.
