Sometimes, viewers just want to sit back and enjoy life even if it’s vicariously. For winter 2022, Akebi’s Sailor Uniform (Akebi-chan no Serafuku) will feed your slice-of-life need! Written and illustrated by Hiro, this manga started serialization online on Shueisha’s Tonari no Young Jump website back in 2016 and continues up until now. The television anime adaptation will be produced by CloverWorks with Manatsu Murakami (member of idol group Dialogue+) voicing the lead and will premiere on January 9, 2022. Let's take a quick look into this feel-good series!

Synopsis (AniRadio Rewrite)

The story follows a quirky, young girl from the countryside named Akebi Komichi. She just passed the entrance exam and received a scholarship to the prestigious Roubai Academy private middle school for girls. As she enters this new chapter in her life, Akebi wishes for two simple things: to wear the school’s sailor uniform and to make a ton of friends!

What to Expect & First Impressions of the Series

The illustrations of the manga are quite detailed especially when the characters are given moments to shine. Writer and illustrator Hiro does an excellent job of making drawings that work with the character’s personality and, although the setting is quite simple, the environment is well-done. There are many gorgeous stop-motion-like panels that focus on Akebi doing some acrobatic stunt and they’re quite pleasing to flip through. Hiro is definitely an artistic powerhouse. So, look forward to gorgeous artwork throughout the series!

With CloverWorks (known for works like Horimiya, The Promised Neverland, and more) producing the anime adaptation, there’s hope for the art style to shine. And based on the trailers so far, the art from the manga is done justice and there are bound to be numerous breath-taking, visually-pleasing scenes.

Akebi-chan no Sailor-fuku has massive slice-of-life energy. There are no major overarching plotlines about demons, titans, pirate treasure, or any other extravagant elements. Expect to see the life of middle schoolers adjusting to their new life in a fancy academy and how they enjoy being together. And we’re all for it! Just a chill experience that might even bring back some memories of your younger days.

Given its chill nature, watching the series should be quite a light and pleasant experience for viewers. No need to worry about spoilers or missing an episode. You can just pick up the series anytime and you’ll be right back in with Akebi and her friends. Hopefully the anime adapts a similar, welcoming atmosphere filled with friendship, fun, and enjoying life.

If you’re into laid-back, slice-of-life series, then this is definitely a show to look out for this coming Winter 2022. The pace might feel a bit slow, but that’s the style and how life goes for the girls in Roubai Academy.
