Fans of the Forger family are 100% excited for 2022 as the much-awaited anime adaptation is finally on the way! Last October, CloverWorks Studio and WIT Studio announced their new project, the anime adaptation of Spy x Family. And the short promotional video below is oozing with hype. Let's take a quick look into this highly popular series.

Spy x Family written and illustrated by Tatsuya Endo made its debut back in March 2019 (which feels like an eternity ago) on Shueisha’s Shonen Jump +. Since its release, the series has been constantly exploding in popularity given the fun premise, well-written story, and beautiful art style. As of November 2021, the series has collected and published a total of 8 tankobon volumes with over 12.5 million copies in circulation.

Now, what's can we expect with the adaptation?

Brief Look at the Plot (AniRadio Rewrite)

Peace in Westalis is at stake and the nation’s master spy, codename “Twilight”, must do everything he can to keep the peace. With extremists attempting to start conflict with the neighboring state of Ostania, Twilight is charged with a new mission: infiltrate the elite Eden Academy to investigate Donovan Desmond, an Ostanian politician. In order to succeed, Twilight must take up the daunting challenge of marriage, raising a child, and having a (fake) family.

Thus, Loid Forger (Twilight) and his family are born. First, he adopts a seemingly promising orphan named Anya as his own child to enroll her in Eden Academy. Afterward, he meets a seemingly normal office worker in search of a partner, Yor Briar, and the two get hitched. However, this gorgeous woman is secretly known as the “Thorn Princess”, an elite assassin. Unbeknownst to Loid and Yor, their child is the product of scientific experiments — an esper with the ability to read minds! As such, Anya immediately finds out the truth behind her parents but she keeps it all under wraps.

The Forger family tries their best to seem like a regular family while each member goes about their own secret lives. And as their adventures go on, the Forger family slowly seems more real than a mere façade.

Fantastic Storyline and Setting

Spy x Family has an intriguing premise and the story works well with the two major aspects: espionage and family life. The two concepts seem incompatible, or are difficult to merge at least, but this series does an excellent job of blending them! There’s not a lot of violence despite the setting and, in place of all the fighting, a fair amount of humor comes into play. Viewers can look forward to an engaging, funny, witty, feel-good, and interesting story.

Awesome Aesthetic and Art

The manga’s art style is beautiful and the trailer seems to show that the adaptation carries over the style and nuances from the source material. Members of the Forger family have their own unique aesthetic, showcasing and adding to the character’s personality.

Loid is quite handsome and goes about things with an aura of confidence (whether secret tasks or regular family tasks). Yor’s striking beauty and delicate demeanor perfectly conceals her strong, aggressive nature as an assassin. Anya is cute and very expressive with a lot on her mind despite her young age. Endo’s style is neat, clean, and the characters are incredibly expressive of emotions; viewers should look forward to an aesthetically pleasing anime!

Lovable Characters

Given the characters’ own secret situations and backgrounds, you can look forward to them facing many difficulties together and apart. There are many moments when each of the main characters have their time to shine and contribute to solving whatever issue is at hand. And as the story goes on, it becomes harder to not fall in love with all of them. Even

Despite their differences, the Forger family members have a lovely dynamic that gradually develops throughout the series. The manga adds an exciting spin to what might initially seem like another espionage series by establishing a fun, family atmosphere with memorable characters. Even Bond Forger, their dog, has such a personality (definitely watch out for this doggo's merch in the future).

Is the Adaptation in Good Hands?

CloverWorks Studio and WIT Studio are in charge of production for the series and they’re known to churn out excellent series. CloverWorks is known for working on series like Darling in the Franxx, Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai, The Promised Neverland, Horimiya, and more. Studio WIT is known for working on the first three seasons of Attack on Titan, Vinland Saga, and many others.

Kazuhiro Furuhashi is in charge of direction and is known for works like the Ruroni Kenshin series (and OVAs), Hunter x Hunter, GetBackers, and many others. The people in charge of this adaptation have great track records and viewers are very hopeful that the Spy x Family will turn out well!
