'Gintama: The Final' anime film exceeds 1 million tickets sold, box office sales at 1.4 billion yen

The official website of Japanese news media The Mantan Web announced on Monday that the 'production-claimed final' movie franchise of Hideaki Sorachi's "Gintama" manga series titled "Gintama: The Final" has sold over 1 million tickets earning the film 1.4 billion yen in box office sales on its first month in Japanese theaters. The blockbuster anime film premiered last January 8 in Japan.

The film's production committee claims that the movie will be the "the finale, for real this time" for the franchise.

A new two-episode net anime special titled "Gintama: The Semi-final" with a story that will tie into the film premiered exclusively in Japan via the Japanese video-on-demand service dTV on January 15 and 20, respectively.


Gintama manga series began its serialization last 2003 and ended in 2019 with over 55 million copies in circulation worldwide. Several TV anime series adaptation seasons was produced with a total 367 episodes across the board. The latest anime series premiered in July 2018. Animation studios Sunrise handled the production from Episode 1 through 265 and later was transferred to Bandai Namco Pictures from Episode 266 until its last episode. The manga has also inspired two previous anime films, one upcoming anime film, OVA projects, two live-action films, two live-action net spinoffs and anime events.


It was highly acclaimed as the most comedic manga series during the generation and the most diverse as it collaborates with different anime series through their famous crossovers such as Death Note, Sket Dance, Assasination Classroom, Food Wars!: Shokugeki no Soma, Hayao Miyazaki films and many more.
