Takao Saito's 'Golgo 13' manga series has been certified on Thursday by the Guinness World Records for the 'Most Published Volumes for a Single Manga Series' after the 201st volume of the manga was released in Japan on July 5. Golgo 13 took over the title of the previous holder, KochiKame: Tokyo Beat Cops (Kochira Katsushika-ku Kameari Kōen Mae Hashutsujo), who had held the record of 200 published volumes.
'Golgo 13', the manga series written and illustrated by Takao Saito, started its serialization in October 1968 in Shogakukan's Big Comic magazine and has published its first physical volume on June 21, 1973 under Japanese publisher Shogakukan and Saito's Saito Production spinoff publishing house Leed Publishing.
The manga won several awards including the 1975 Shogakukan Manga Award for general manga and the Grand Prize at the 2002 Japan Cartoonists Association Awards.
Golgo 13 is the oldest manga still in publication. It has sold 300 million copies in various formats, including compilation books, making it the second-best-selling manga series and the top selling Seinen manga series in history.
It has been adapted into two live-action feature films, an anime film, an original video animation, an anime television series and six video games.
