Horror manga artist Junji Ito announces 'Maniac' anime adaptation for 2023 on Netflix

Twenty of Junji Ito's popular works are getting animated on Netflix.

In a video announcement with Netflix Japan, famous horror manga author Junji Ito announced that 20 of his major works will be adapted into an anime called Junji Ito: Maniac which will premiere on Netflix worldwide in 2023.

Among the 20 of his works revealed for animation include: Tomie, The Hanging Balloons, and the Souichi series (Souichi's Diary of Delights and Souichi's Diary of Curses).


Junji Ito (伊藤 潤二) is a Japanese horror mangaka. His work has developed a substantial cult following, with some deeming him a significant figure in recent horror iconography.


Some of his most notable works include:

  • Tomie: A series chronicling an immortal girl who drives her stricken admirers to madness

  • Uzumaki: A three-volume series about a town obsessed with spirals (nominated for an Eisner Award in 2003 and 2009)

  • Gyo: A two-volume story in which fish are controlled by a strain of sentient bacteria called "the death stench."
