Japan’s former prime minister Shinzo Abe has been rushed to the hospital after collapsing in the middle of a speech in the city of Nara.

An NHK reporter at the scene said they heard two consecutive bangs during Abe’s speech, suggesting a shooting. A 42-year-old male suspect has been detained.
Japanese media entities have reported the former premier was not conscious and appeared to be in cardiac arrest.
