Junji Ito nominated for 2022 Eisner Awards, 'Maniac: Japanese Tales of the Macabre' cast revealed

This 2022, Ito is again in the running for both Best U.S. Edition of International Material - Asia and Best Writer/Artist.

Prolific horror manga author Junji Ito has been nominated for the 2022 Eisner Awards.


The Eisner Awards (Full name: The Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards) are given to comic book artists who have made monumental achievements in the industry. It is sometimes referred to as the equivalent of the film industry's Oscars.

This 2022, Ito is again in the running for both Best U.S. Edition of International Material - Asia and Best Writer/Artist. He won both of these Eisner awards last year.


His two books being nominated for this year's Eisner Awards are Lovesickness: Junji Ito Story Collection and Deserter: Junji Ito Story Collection. Stories from both collections will be animated in Netflix's Junji Ito Maniac: Japanese Tales of the Macabre. See official scene cuts on the official website.


Ito was first nominated in 2003 for Uzumaki. In 2019, he received his first Eisner Award for Best Adaptation from Another Medium for his manga adaptation of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. In 2021, he received two more Eisner Awards for his works Remina and Venus in the Blind Spot (Best U.S. Edition of International Material - Asia and Best Writer/Artist)

In addition, the initial cast members have been revealed for the upcoming Netflix anime adaptation Junji Ito Maniac: Japanese Tales of the Macabre. The show is slated to premiere on the streaming platform in 2023.
