It is directed by Ayumu Watanabe, who was the director of "Doraemon: Nobita's Dinosaur", "The Story of Princess Kaguya" and "Children of the Sea". The character design and animation direction are both handled by first-generation Studio Ghibli student Kenichi Konishi, while the series scripts are written by Satomi Oshima.
The original work written by Kanako Nishi won the 152nd Naoki Prize considering the novel as best-selling with a cumulative circulation of over 350,000 worldwide.
This work depicts the trajectory and growth of Nikuko and Kikuko, a mother and daughter who live alone on a boat at a fishing port.
