The film is based on the manga series written and illustrated by Tsutomu Nihei which was serialized between April 2009 and September 2015 in Kodansha's Monthly Afternoon magazine. It has been collected into 15 tankōbon volumes.

The manga inspired a TV anime series adaptation by Polygon Pictures with the first season airing from April 10, 2014 until June 26, 2014. It was directed by Kobun Shizuno with his assistant Hiroyuki Seshita, and scripts are written by Sadayuki Murai. The characters are designed by Yuki Moriyama. The first season ended with 12 episode and with the announcement of a season season.

The second season consisting of another 12 episodes was from April 10, 2015 until June 26 of the same year with the cast and staff reprising their roles.

The story follows the adventures of Garde pilot Nagate Tanikaze, who lived in the underground layer of Sidonia since birth and was raised by his grandfather. Never having met anyone else, he trains himself in an old Guardian pilot simulator every day, eventually mastering it. After his grandfather's death, he emerges to the surface and is selected as a Guardian pilot, just as Sidonia is once again threatened by the Gauna.
