The official website of the Manga Taishō awards has concluded its first round and announced the top 10 nominees for 2022.
The selection process covered manga series with a maximum of eight volumes that were released from Jan. 1, 2021 to Dec. 31, 2021. The selection committee was composed of 99 members who each chose their top five recommended manga until they were able to narrow it down to the top 10.
As a rule, previous winners of the Manga Taishō were no longer eligible for this round.
The Top 10 nominees (in no particular order) are:
Umi ga Hashiru End Roll (by John Tarachine)
Oshi no Ko (written by Aka Akasaka and illustrated by Mengo Yokoyari)
Onna no Sono no Hoshi (by Yama Wayama)
Jitenshaya-san no Takahashi-kun (by Arare Matsumushi)
Darwin's Incident (by Shun Umezawa)
Dandadan (by Tatu Yukinobu)
Chi: Chikyū no Undō ni Tsuite (by Uoto)
Trillion Game (written by Riichiro Inagaki and illustrated by Ryoichi Ikegami)
Hirayasumi (by Keigo Shinzo)
Look Back (by Tatsuki Fujimoto)
For the second round, the members of the selection committee (who are mainly bookstore employees) will read all the nominated works and select the top three. The results will be announced at an awards ceremony at Nippon Broadcasting System's Imagine Studio in Tokyo in mid to late March.

The Manga Taishō (マンガ大賞) is an annual Japanese manga award. The award is limited to series with eight or fewer collected volumes in order to promote newer titles. The nominating committee, composed of staff members from bookstores, each initially vote for five series and the titles with the top ten number of votes become the official nominees of the year. Finally a second round of voting determines the winner, as well as second and third place.
