Overlord (Japanese: オーバーロード) is a Japanese light novel series written by Kugane Maruyama and illustrated by so-bin. It is a dark fantasy that begins when Momonga, a player of the virtual reality online game "Yggdrasil," is transported to another world in the form of Avatar Ainz, a skeleton.

The light novel began serialization online in 2010 before being acquired by Enterbrain. Fourteen volumes have been published since July 30, 2012. The author has stated in 2020 that the series will end after 17 novels.

A manga adaptation by Satoshi Ōshio, with art by Hugin Miyama, began serialization in Kadokawa Shoten's manga magazine Comp Ace starting Nov. 26, 2014. Both the light novels and the manga are licensed in North America by Yen Press.

The anime TV series adaptation by Studio Madhouse is currently at four seasons: Season 1 (2015), Season 2 (2018), Season 3 (2018), and the upcoming Season 4 this 2022.

In addition, a 2D action game titled Overlord: Escape from Nazarick is in production for Steam and Nintendo Switch. In the game, players will control Clementine (CV: Aoi Yuuki), who is working to recover her lost memories and escape from Nazarick's underground tomb.

However, Momonga, a powerful wizard and master of the dark guild Ainz Ooal Gown, decides to spend his last few moments in the game as the servers begin to shut down. To his surprise, despite the clock having struck midnight, Momonga is still fully conscious as his character and, moreover, the non-player characters appear to have developed personalities of their own!

Confronted with this abnormal situation, Momonga commands his loyal servants to help him investigate and take control of this new world, with the hopes of figuring out what has caused this development and if there may be others in the same predicament.
