Square Enix has announced on Tuesday that Kayaharuka, the manga artist of the manga adaptation of Shu's light novel series The Misfit of Demon King Academy (Maō Gakuin no Futekigōsha)" passed away on July 6.
The cause of death was not revealed on Square Enix's announcement but Kayaharuka had been suffering from pancreatic cancer since 2019. The artist's family held a funeral.
It was recalled that the manga adaptation of the series went on indefinite hiatus last week for Kayaharuka to undergo treatment, but the artist had already passed away at the time of the announcement on July 7.
Kayahuraka's work is based on the Japanese light novel series written by Shu and illustrated by Yoshinori Shizuma which was originally serialized as a web novel on the user-generated novel publishing website Shousetsuka ni Narou in April 2017. ASCII Media Works has published the series in Japan since March 2018 under the Dengeki Bunko imprint. As of October 2020, it has been collected into 8 volumes.
The novel inspired a manga adaptation with illustrations by Kayaharuka which was serialized online via Square Enix's Manga UP! website since July 2018 and has been collected in three tankōbon volumes. An English version of the manga is also being published by Square Enix.
