The official Twitter for the Violet Evergarden franchise announced on Friday that the August release of the Blu-ray and DVD version of the franchise's second spin-off film titled "Violet Evergarden the Movie" has been postponed due to the effects brought by COVID-19. The new Blu-ray and DVD release date is tentatively scheduled for October 13.

The film's Blu-ray and DVD release was originally scheduled on August 4, but due to the production and manufacturing issues caused by the declaration of the state of emergency in Japan to prevent further spread of the new coronavirus (COVID-19), it was rescheduled to October 13.

The film is animated by Kyoto Animation and is directed by Taichi Ishidate with Reiko Yoshida writing the scripts. Akiko Takase designs the characters and Yota Tsuruoka handles the sound direction. The film was originally scheduled to premiere on January 10, 2020, but it was later delayed to April 24, 2020 due to the Kyoto Animation arson attack. It was subsequently delayed again to September 18, 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It premiered in Japan last September 18, 2020.

The film premiered in Japanese theaters last September 18, 2020 and finished its release having ranked in 7th place at the Japanese box office for the year with earnings of 2.13 billion yen ($21 million).

The "Violet Evergarden: The Movie" film is based on the light novel series by Kana Akatsuki, who won the"5th Kyoto Animation Awards" grand prize. The story follows Violet Evergarden, who once fought as a soldier, and becomes an automatic doll that captures the wishes of her clients and puts them into words, touching the emotions of various clients and understanding the hearts of the people.

It inspired a 13-episode TV anime series adaptation by Kyoto Animation which was aired between January and April 2018. The series was awarded Best Animation at the 2019 Crunchyroll Anime Awards. An original video animation was released on July 4, 2018.

The novel also inspired two spin-off films with the first spin-off titled "Violet Evergarden: Eternity and the Auto Memory Doll" premiered in Japanese theaters in September 2019, whereas the second spin-off titled "Violet Evergarden the Movie" released in September 2020.
