'Jujutsu Kaisen 0' dethrones Evangelion 3.0 as Japan's 9th Highest-Grossing Anime Film of All Time

Jujutsu Kaisen 0, the prequel anime film of Gege Akutami’s Jujutsu Kaisen series, is now Japan’s 9th Highest-Grossing Film of all Time with over 10,400,000,000 yen in gross sales from 7.6 million admissions as of TOHO's sales report on Sunday, February 6.

With the current figure, the film has surpassed the final Evangelion film Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time's gross sales of 10.23 billion yen.

Studio MAPPA returned for the animation production and the rest of the staff and cast of the TV anime series reprised their roles for the project. The film is based on Gege Akutami's Jujutsu Kaisen 0: Tokyo Prefectural Jujutsu High School (Jujutsu Kaisen 0 Tokyo Toritsu Jujutsu Kōtō Senmon Gakkō) manga story. It premiered in Japan last December 24, 2021.


Synopsis by Crunchyroll:

Hardship, regret, shame: the negative feelings that humans feel become Curses that lurk in our everyday lives. The Curses run rampant throughout the world, capable of leading people to terrible misfortune and even death. What's more, the Curses can only be exorcised by another Curse.


Itadori Yuji is a boy with tremendous physical strength, though he lives a completely ordinary high school life. One day, to save a friend who has been attacked by Curses, he eats the finger of the Double-Faced Specter, taking the Curse into his own soul. From then on, he shares one body with the Double-Faced Specter. Guided by the most powerful of sorcerers, Gojo Satoru, Itadori is admitted to the Tokyo Metropolitan Technical High School of Sorcery, an organization that fights the Curses... and thus begins the heroic tale of a boy who became a Curse to exorcise a Curse, a life from which he could never turn back.


About Jujutsu Kaisen:

The Jujutsu Kaisen manga series written and illustrated by Gege Akutami was serialized in Shueisha's Weekly Shōnen Jump since March 2018. The individual chapters are collected and published by Shueisha, with twelve tankōbon volumes released as of August 2020.


The manga inspired a TV anime series consisting of 24 episodes. Animation studio MAPPA is animating the series with Sunghoo Park serving as the series director. Hiroshi Seko is writing and supervising the scripts and Tadashi Hiramatsu designing the characters. The music composition is handled by Hiroaki Tsutsumi, Yoshimasa Terui, and Arisa Okehazama.


Synopsis:

For some strange reason, Yuji Itadori, despite his insane athleticism would rather just hang out with the Occult Club. However, her soon finds out that the occult is as real as it gets when his fellow club members are attacked! Meanwhile, the mysterious Megumi Fushiguro is tracking down a special-grade cursed object, and his search leads him to Itadori...
