The official YouTube channel of TOHO Films has streamed on Wednesday an announcement video (AV) for the live-action film sequel adaptation of Aka Akasaka's "Kaguya-sama: Love is War". The AV reveals the film's premiere date, cast and staff and the sequel title.
The live-action sequel is titled "Kaguya-sama wa Kokurasetai 2: Tensai-tachi no Renai Zunōsen (Kaguya-sama Love is War 2: Genuises' Love Brain Battle)" and has been announced to open in Japanese cinemas on August 20, 2021.
Some of the cast has been announced to reprise their roles including Shō Hirano as Miyuki Shirogane, Kanna Hashimoto as Kaguya Shinomiya, Hayato Sano as Yū Ishigami and Nana Asakawa as Chika Fujiwara.
The film will be directed by Hayato Kawai and scripts will be written by Yūichi Tokunaga which of both returns to work on the sequel.
The series is based on the Japanese romantic comedy manga series written and illustrated by Aka Akasaka. It began serialization in Shueisha's seinen manga magazine Miracle Jump in May 2015 and was transferred to Weekly Young Jump in March 2016.
It has been adapted into TV anime series with the first season aired from January 12 to March 30, 2019 with 12 episodes. It was directed by Shinichi Omata under the pseudonym Mamoru Hatakeyama and written by Yasuhiro Nakanishi, with animation by A-1 Pictures. Yuuko Yahiro provided the character designs, while Jin Aketagawa was in charge of the sound direction. Kei Haneoka composed the series' music. It was followed by a second season that aired from April 11 to June 27, 2020 with cast and staff reprising their roles.
On October 25, 2020, an announcement trailer was released revealing that the anime will be getting a third season and an original video animation (OVA). The OVA will be released in 2021 while there is still no release date revealed for the 3rd season.
The story follows student council president Miyuki Shirogane and vice-president Kaguya Shinomiya who appear to be the perfect couple. Kaguya is the daughter of a wealthy conglomerate family, and Miyuki is the top student at the school and well-known across the prefecture. Although they like each other, they are too proud to confess their love as they believe whoever does so first would lose. The story follows their many schemes to make the other one confess.
