Streaming platform Netflix has released teaser promotions for an upcoming original anime titled Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, slated to premiere in September 2022. It is co-produced by CD Projekt Red and Studio Trigger.
The big reveal was made during Netflix's international online event Geeked Week which runs from June 7 to 11, 2022.
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners serves as a spinoff to the Cyberpunk 2077 action role-playing video game developed and published by CD Projekt.
As with the Cyberpunk 2077 universe, the story of Edgerunners takes place in Night City where technology and human body modification (called cyberware) have become commonplace. The anime centers on a boy named David who lives as an outlaw mercenary for its protagonist. In the official teaser below, he meets a mysterious girl named Lucy.
Edgerunners is slated for 10 episodes. The anime is directed by Hiroyuki Imaishi (Promare), co-directed by Masahiko Otsuka (Gurren Lagann), with character designs by Yoh Yoshinari (Neon Genesis Evangelion).
In the video below, the CD Projekt Red team discuss how the anime adaptation will focus on the more social elements of the Cyberpunk universe. This paves way to more powerful storylines that could not be covered in Cyberpunk 2077 which had to focus on the gameplay.
