Sci-fi light novel 'The Tunnel to Summer, the Exit of Goodbyes' gets animated film adaptation

A press release by Japanese publishing company Shogakukan has announced that the light novel The Tunnel to Summer, the Exit of Goodbyes (Romaji: Natsu e no Tunnel, Sayonara no Deguchi) written by Mokune Hachi and illustrated by Kukka is getting an animated film adaptation in Summer 2022.

The story features main characters Kaoru Tono, a boy coping with the loss of his sister, Karen, and Anzu Hanashiro, a girl who transfers to his school due to certain issues. At their school, there is a popular urban legend about the Urashima Tunnel, wherein whoever enters the tunnel gets their wish granted in exchange for never aging. The two decide to work together to enter the tunnel in order to fulfill their respective wishes.




The film will be directed by Tomohisa Taguchi, who is famous for working on Akudama Drive and Digimon Adventure: Last Evolution Kizuna. Production will be handled by animation studio CLAP (Pompo: The Cinéphile).

The Tunnel to Summer, the Exit of Goodbye (Japanese: 夏へのトンネル、さよならの出口) is a Japanese light novel written by Mokune Hachi and illustrated by Kukka, published by Shogakukan under its Gagaga Bunko imprint in July 2019. A manga adaptation, titled The Tunnel to Summer, the Exit of Goodbye: Ultramarine, illustrated by Koudon, started in Shogakukan's seinen manga magazine Monthly Sunday Gene-X in July 2020.
